Marco Amelia Desination of the Week ; Barcelona
By: Marco | January 7th, 2008That’s right Marco, Lovely Barcelona !
After Napoli last week and Siberia the week before, Marco Amelia is now a target of Barcelona! The city where you eat at 11pm, go to bed at noon and where you see beautiful lesbians making out in every park in the city.the blaugrana have set their sights on the Secondo Azzurri keeper. The Gazzetta says that Barça are ready to offer Livorno around 7M$ for Amelia’s services.
Marco Amelia might get the chance to block shots of Eto’o, Messi and Henry on a regular basis in training. What’s the catch you say? Barcelona are looking for a number 2 keeper after Jorquera tore some ligament or ligaments in his knee so he’ll be missing at least 6 months of action. So Marco Amelia isn’t exactly going to step on the pitch and save a penalty in the next Clasico. On the bright side, Amelia will feel like he’s in the Nazionale everyday! Great players, great training sessions, no meaningful pitch time.
Marco Amelia had rejected the offer earlier in the week saying how only a starting job will assure him of a spot in next Summer’s Euro in 2 countries that are north of Italy. But Amelia’s agent, Carlo Pallavicino has claimed that the opportunity of playing at Camp Nou has made Mr. Amelia reconsider.
Victor Valdes is playing well but Marco would be an excellent backup who will force some nice inner-squad competition between goalies. I think that Marco Amelia fancies his chances to nab the #1 spot sooner than later. After all, Marco Amelia IS # 35 on the Times Most wanted Players list. It needs to be seen if Spinelli will let the keeper go during the winter market. For some reason, Spinelli seems to think highly of Alfonso De Lucia and needs to find some way to finance the transfer market . That’s not an excellent price considering how he’s GiGi Buffon’s understudy. Anyways, Sparta Rotterdam keeper Sander Westerveld and Malaga goalie Francesco Arnau are on Barcelona’s short list as well. Let’s see how this transpires…
I can’t wait to see where Marco’ll be headed next week; I hope it’s somewhere fun like QPR or Étoile du Sahel !

There was a great story at goal.com the other day about how like 25 clubs had called Barca when their second keeper went down, trying to get them to buy a keeper from them — wonder if Livorno were one of those. Who’s the backup at Livorno, anyway? Is he any good, or would you have to buy if/when Amelia leaves?

Alfonso De Lucia is the backup. He played for Parma a little bit. I don’t really feel safe with him in net. I’d rather see Marco leave in the summer…

[...] got the lowdown on Marco Amelia’s latest rumored destination: None other than a little club called Barcelona, where he’d be their favorite second-choice [...]

I think you can already kiss both hands that Amelia is still hanging around in Tuscany. He could’ve been gone 18 months ago, but he stayed.
On another note: how do you feel about Lucarelli returning to Italy, but no longer playing for Livorno?

I hate to say this, but Amelia is grossely overrated.
Yes he’s a good keeper and his days in Livorno have molded him in a better one, so his stay here was mutually beneficial i think. But Amelia isn’t top 10 in the world right now, and his 8M$ price tag confirms that..(trust me, Marco Amelia replacing Fontana wouldn’t be that much of an upgrade for Palermo)As for Lucarelli, Livorno is a small town (pop: 150.000)
so when a large part of the fans get on your back, it’s hard to steer away from the attentionIt’s totally understandable for Lucarelli to move on to greener pastures and CL football. Seeing him go to Parma or Genoa is kind of dissapointing as they’re relegation battlers as well…
