Diamanti Are a Coach’s Best Friend

By: Marco | March 2nd, 2008

So much for that 5-3 high octane prediction i had. The game was far from dull, especially in the 2nd half but it didn’t deliver a boatload of goals like i was expecting. At least we bounced out of the bottom

Livorno 1- 0 Catania

So which of you bet the house on a Livorno win like i told you to? No one? That was free money, no way in hell was Catania going to take 3 points from us for the 2nd time of the year. All the credit goes to GC Camolese once again…oh yeah and Diamanti too.

Ale Diamanti came in for Daniele De Vezze right after half time. Once, the diamond was on the pitch. The whole way Livorno played changed. I love the fact that Diamanti’s more of a Trequartista attacker than anything else and contrary to Tavano and Tristan, he comes back to help on defence and is often the starting point (some time ending point) of a Livorno counter attack. GC Camolese you have a little polishing to do and you’ve found yourself an ACE to add to your sleeve.

In the 1st half, Catania looked dangerous on the counter attack but Marco Amelia cleared away the shots that made it to his net. The 1st half was a sloppy affair; it didn’t look like Serie A football. Both teams were disorganised and were losing balls left and right. Plain old bad passing and timing, on both ends of the pitch.

At the start of the 2nd half Camolese decided to go for a 3-4-1-2 from the get go. Diamanti was subbed in at the expense of a solid Daniele - DDV- De Vezze. GC sent the Tavano-Diamanti-Tristan trident upfront and gave them liscence to roam free. Seeing how no one seems to bbe able to link Livorno’s Midfield witht their attack, Livorno might as well add another attacker and let the trident go back on Defense to collect the ball themselves. And a smart move it turned out to be. For the 1st time this year, GC Camolese decided to put 3 attackers on the field. It took exactly 16 minutes for the Trident to put one in the back of the net. Diamanti pulled an amazing shot from his bag of tricks to stick it in the top left corner ! 1-0 at the hour mark. 2 goals in the last 2 games, plus the fact that Diamanti has a knack for scoring the highlight reel goal. Are you taking notes GC? i think you found the right solution to your ; how to include Diamanti in the squad without losing the balance of power in midfield. Even Diego Tristan hit the post 2 minutes later!

Highlights/Diamanti’s wunderstrike :

* smells like a goal of the week nominee (Here you go Chris, a video of Diamanti’s goal, with no crazy announcers)

LIVORNO - CATANIA 1-0

MARCATORE: 62’ Diamanti

LIVORNO (3-5-2): Amelia 6.5, Balleri 6, Grandoni 6, Galante 6.5, Knezevic 6 (69’ Pavan 6), A. Filippini 6.5, Pulzetti 6, De Vezze 6 (46’ Diamanti 7.5), Pasquale 6, Tavano 6, Tristan 6.5 (75’ Vidigal 6). A disp.: De Lucia, E. Filippini, Loviso, Bogdani. All. Camolese 7

CATANIA (3-4-3): Polito 5.5, Silvestri 5.5 (65’ Tedesco 5.5), Terlizzi 6.5, Silvestre 5.5, Stovini 7, Vargas 5.5, Izco 5.5. (88’ Alvarez s.v.), Bigianti 5.5, Mascara 6, Spinesi 6, Martinez 5.5. A disp.: Bizzarri, Sardo, Sabato, Gazzola, Sottil. All. Baldini 6

ARBITRO: Bergonzi di Genova 5.5

AMMONITI: Martinez, Terlizzi, Izco, Mascara (C), Diamanti, Balleri (L)

With a style like Livorno (8 incontristi, 2 attackers) i guess it’ll be necessary, from here on out, to see that 3 man attack. By Playing 3 attackers we manage to hold up the ball a little longer so the extra midfield work that requires a 5th midfielder is rendered useless. Add that to the fact that a trident is way more exciting to watch!

For the 20 minutes Livorno had 3 attackers on the field that’s when most of their chances came and they even managed to play some nice, left-wing, football for once.

Marco Amelia had a quiet day at the office, he needed to make 1 or 2 nice saves in the 1st half but Livorno managed to control the tempo and all. But Once Alessandro Diamanti came on that meant the only thing Juan Manuel Vargas and Spinesi would be kissing today, was goodbye to all 3 points…

I’ve liked this Diamanti ever since I’ve seen him at the beginning of the season. Excellent technical ability. If he can work on the tactical side of things, he can go places.

I’ve liked Diamanti so far this season. A little frail but very technical.
